"The Book of Mormon," a musical satire about religion written by the creators of "South Park," and "War Horse," a British play about a boy’s search for his beloved horse, dominated the 65th annual Tony Awards Sunday night.

The apparent predestination of "The Book of Mormon" as the big winner was not lost on comedian Chris Rock before he presented the best musical Tony. "This is such a waste of time," Rock joked. "It’s like taking a hooker to dinner."

"The Book of Mormon" got the best musical Tony, along with eight other trophies. The show had been nominated in 14 categories.

What the show lacked in suspense was made up with entertainment as two-time Tony host Neil Patrick Harris guided the three-hour broadcast from Broadway’s Beacon Theatre. Harris, who is openly homosexual, opened the show with a tongue-in-cheek number proclaiming "Broadway’s not just for gays anymore."

Most of the dozen song-and-dance performances were from nominated musicals, but the leading actors for "Spider-man, Turn Off the Dark" sang a duet from the show that opens on Broadway next Tuesday.

"War Horse" was the big winner among plays, winning all five categories in which it was nominated — including the best play Tony. It is the story of a teen’s journey to find his horse after it was shipped to France for duty in World War I. Click here to purchase War Horse Tickets.

Elton’s September return will mark the beginning of a three-year residency at The Colosseum and his second as a Caesars Palace headliner.

To purchase tickets please visit our dedicated Elton John Las Vegas Page.

According to Elton, "Caesars Palace is just a perfect, idyllic place to play, and the show will be a gargantuan feast of music and imagery," said Elton. "I’m going to have a fabulous piano that Yamaha has been working on for four years, and that’s the reason why the show is called ‘The Million Dollar Piano.’"

Elton will be accompanied by his band, which includes Davey Johnstone on guitar, Bob Birch on bass, John Mahon on percussion, Nigel Olsson on drums and Kim Bullard on keyboards with a special appearance by percussionist Ray Cooper.

One of the most successful live acts on the road today, Elton and his band put on an unforgettable show: the entire audience standing, dancing and singing along with much-loved classic songs.

The monumental career of international singer, songwriter and performer Elton John has spanned more than five decades. He is one of the top-selling solo artists of all time, with 35 gold and 25 platinum albums, 29 consecutive Top 40 hits and has sold more than 250-million records worldwide.
The new tuner is co-directed by Parker and Casey Nicholaw, who is also credited for choreography. The action follows two young Mormons, Elder Price (Andrew Rannells) and Elder Cunningham (Josh Gad) on a missionary trip to Uganda. Not all goes according to plan, as the duo deals with a tyrannical warlord and a village filled with less-than-willing would-be converts.

Other leads include Nikki M. James as Nabulungi, a girl from the village and the Mormons’ first convert, and Rory O’Malley as Elder McKinley, the Mormon head of the mission. An ensemble cast of Mormons and villagers rounds out the accolade-earning production.

"The Book of Mormon" is two-and-a-half hours long, including a 15-minute intermission. The musical’s schedule will change again on May 30, with evening shows then running Tuesday through Thursday at 7 p.m., and Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. The matinee schedule will also adjust to 3 p.m. on Friday and Sunday, and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Here’s what the critics are saying about the Book of Mormon:

–”"The Book of Mormon” is the first musical to open on Broadway since “La Cage aux Folles” that has the smell of a send-in-the-tourists hit. Casey Nicholaw (“The Drowsy Chaperone”) has staged the musical numbers with cheery energy, and the cast, especially Nikki M. James, is terrific. But don’t let anybody try to tell you that “The Book of Mormon” is suitable for anyone other than 12-year-old boys who have yet to graduate from fart jokes to “Glee.” A couple of reasonably effective production numbers notwithstanding, it’s flabby, amateurish and very, very safe.” [Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal.]

–”Along with Robert Lopez, one of the uproarious brains behind “Avenue Q,” Matt Stone and Trey Parker have devised “The Book of Mormon,” the pricelessly entertaining act of musical-comedy subversion that opened Thursday night at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The mighty O’Neill himself would have to have given it up for this extraordinarily well-crafted musical assault on all things holy.” [Peter Marks, The Washington Post]

–”Teaming with Robert Lopez, who co-wrote the music and lyrics for Avenue Q, Parker and Stone have created one of the freshest original musicals in recent memory. It has tuneful songs, clever lyrics, winning characters, explosive laughs and disarmingly intimate moments. Religious zealots are not going to roll up, but the show manages to have a comic field day with Mormonism while simultaneously acknowledging – maybe even respecting – the right of everyone to follow any faith they choose. Or invent.” [David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter]

Jacobs Theatre. Gregory Mosher directs the ensemble cast: Chris Noth, Kiefer Sutherland (in his Broadway debut), Brian Cox, Jim Gaffigan, and Jason Patric, son of the late playwright.

The story centers around four former high school basketball stars (Noth, Sutherland, Gaffigan and Patric). They gather in Scranton, PA, around their ailing coach (Cox) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their win in the state championship game. But as long-held grudges are revealed and their friendships are threatened, they begin to question the value of competition and its meaning in their lives.

The play — which won a Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award and New York Drama Critics Circle Award — made its Broadway debut in 1972. The work went on to become a feature film in 1982, also written and directed by Miller. Its 2011 revival is produced by Robert Cole, Frederick Zollo, and the Shubert Organization.
